Vestfirdir, or the Westfjords is the region in the North-West corner of Iceland.  As the name implies, one of the characteristics of the region is deep and narrow fjords surrounded by steep slopes of eroded cliffs. The region has several fascinating natural attractions such as the waterfall Dynjandi and Latrabjarg; the magnificent vertical bird cliffs where you literally stand on the edge of Europe. Here, seals, seabirds, and waders are at home. The region is rural with a population of around 7000 inhabitants.  The largest municipality is Isafjordur and the smallest municipality is Arneshreppur. Occupation is mostly fishing, sheep farming, aquaculture, fish framning, seaweed processing and tourism.

Due to distances and the geography of the region there are 3 sub regions:

  • Northern
  • Southern
  • Strandir & Reykholar in the Sout-East corner
